Ex-worker sues Si Casa Flores for sexual assault, wins $200,000
GRANTS PASS , OREGON. —The Daily Courier once again isn’t doing their job to properly inform the public about a local business and the abuse suffered by its employees at the hands of the owners and this isn’t the first time this has happened at Si Casa Flores as many people have known for years and it isn’t the first time the Courier has dropped the ball either. The following excerpts of this story are from the Medford Mail Tribune;
A former Si Casa Flores employee who claimed he was a victim of unwanted sexual contact by one of the chain’s owners has been awarded more than $200,000 in U.S. District Court in Medford.
A jury found Leo Esquivel’s civil rights had been violated when Si Casa Flores’ owners, Juan Flores and Gregorio Rodriguez created a hostile work environment by subjecting him to unwanted sexual conduct in the workplace, battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress, Medford attorney Bob Robertson said Monday.
Mr. Esquivel tried to avoid Flores, but on numerous occasions Esquivel continued to be slapped and Flores attempted to grab Esquivel’s crotch, Mr. Esquivel’s attorney Bob Robertson wrote in the lawsuit.
Flores also demanded oral sex and bragged he had been having sex with employees for several years, the suit stated. Co-owner Rodriguez observed Flores’ behavior often, but did nothing to stop it, Robertson said.
Robertson said he is representing Francisco Flores and Eduardo Lopez, who also have filed sexual harassment suits in U.S. District Court against Juan Flores and Rodriguez.
Those suits alleged that the plaintiffs also endured uninvited and unwelcome, offensive sexual comments and remarks, touching, molestation and groping.
Eric Mitton, an attorney with Medford law firm Hornecker, Cowling, Hassen & Heysell, who represented Flores and Rodriguez during the case, said his firm also will represent the owners in the other two suits.
That is the summary of the story that the Daily Courier refused to print citing that this case is in federal court, what utter nonsense!
Since when does the newspaper have to be silent because a case is in federal court? The Mail Tribune doesn’t have a problem printing it.
So why wouldn’t the Courier print this story? Doesn’t the public deserve to know what is happening in their own community? Don’t they have the right to avoid such businesses that are abusive to their employees. Doesn’t the public deserve the right to vote with their dollar against any business that isn’t moral or ethical?
I sure wouldn’t want my children working there if I had knowledge of such activity. The Courier is putting potential future young employees at risk by not reporting on such activity which makes them complicit when they have knowledge of the abuses and don’t report on them. Are they going to apologize to the next round of victims? Silence is not golden.
Isn’t this just another example of the Courier covering up for local businesses?
When is the Daily Courier going to do their job as public informants? Maybe not until the owners sell it but in any case I suggest you don’t hold your breath. At least now the public can make an informed decision.
Thanks to the Medford Mail Tribune and reporter Sanne Specht (541-776-4497) for informing the public of such perverse activity like they should.
The Courier is nothing more than a news propaganda service reprinting articles from the AP, Reuters, UPI, printing fluff and protecting local power brokers. They repeat news instead of report news.
